SCENIC VIEWS FROM CENTER STAGE

I will not fade into the backdrop of my life.
I beg of you, do not insult these restless dreams
by holding them against theatrical scenery. I am
no prop, no stunning recreation of Shakespeare’s
iconic balcony scene. Do not compare my body
to fake ivy snaking around the makeshift lattice.

This is refusal. Mark my words. I will not play
supporting actress on the stage I built myself.

Draw the curtains. This is my show. Let me
play spectacle, the star far outshining those
blinding overhead lights. Start the sound
check. I’ll wait for the violins to cue me in.

I will not fade into the backdrop of my life.
I will glitter and glow. I hardly care if you
show up or not. The show must go on
with or without you, receiving or lacking
the standing ovation I earned on my own.
