“…After a while I understood that,
talking this way, everything dissolves: justice,
pine, hair, woman, you
and I.”
Robert Hass, “Meditation at Lagunitas”

It is said that,
in the grand scheme of things,
nothing matters. We are dust
and back to dust returning.

Rinse and repeat.

But at the atomic level
we are something like forty percent
star material. No wonder you hold me
and I glow. My matter belongs
to your ancestors’ ancestors,
the ground they tread upon,
their fruitful joy and fruitless despair,
and you, of course, the byproduct
of a thousand and one love stories.

You and I, we are children
of light. Descendants of
prehistoric explosions,
the hand of God descending
to mold earth’s clay into arms
we now use to hold tight.

Rinse and repeat.

As long as we can clutch
we cannot dissolve.
